A hummingbird between worlds.

Huitzilin takes its name from the Nahuatl word for hummingbird, an animal that occupied a remarkable place in the worldview of our Mexica ancestors.

In the sixteenth-century Florentine Codex, compiled by Bernardino de Sahagún from the knowledge of Nahua informants, the hummingbird is described as becoming almost lifeless during the cold season and later awakening and “coming to life” again.1 Today we recognize the biological phenomenon underlying this observation as torpor, an extraordinary physiological state in which hummingbirds can drastically reduce their metabolism and body temperature.2

The hummingbird also inhabited the boundary between life and death in Mexica thought. Warriors who died in battle or were sacrificed after capture were believed to accompany the Sun and, after four years, to return in the form of hummingbirds and butterflies.3 Whether observation of the hummingbird’s deathlike torpor contributed to this belief cannot be established. The correspondence, however, is striking.

We chose the hummingbird as the symbol of Huitzilin MindLab for a related boundary that remains no less mysterious: that between the material world and mind. Our work explores correspondences between physical processes and subjective experience without presuming in advance whether they represent separate realms or different manifestations of an underlying reality.

The hummingbird thus becomes our messenger between worlds, not as a claim inherited from Mexica cosmology, but as a metaphor inspired by it: a living creature poised between apparently different states, inviting us to investigate what connects them.

A Blinded Discrimination Test of Coherence in Tarot as a Symbolic System

This study applies a blinded discrimination framework to the analysis of tarot readings as structured symbolic material. Its purpose is not to presume or advocate a particular explanatory model, but to examine whether participants can distinguish coherent symbolic interpretations from experimentally controlled alternatives.

Scientific and Methodological Leadership

Dr. Sergio Saldivar-Salazar

Sergio Saldivar-Salazar, MD, ScM

Dr. Saldivar-Salazar is a physician specializing in Internal Medicine and Nephrology and a biostatistician with a long-standing career in clinical research, particularly in the evaluation of novel therapies for diabetes and metabolic diseases.

He has a sustained interest in the scientific study of anomalous and exceptional human experiences, approaching these topics from a critical, evidence-based, and methodologically rigorous perspective. He is currently affiliated as a Research Volunteer with the Division of Perceptual Studies at the University of Virginia, where he collaborates with Dr. Marieta Pehlivanova and Dr. Bruce Greyson on research related to near-death experiences.

More recently, Dr. Saldivar-Salazar has revisited an early interest in divinatory practices. His initial exposure to cartomancy dates back more than three decades, beginning with the study of the Marseille Tarot. He now investigates symbolic systems as potential tools for exploring questions of individual and collective consciousness when examined under carefully controlled experimental conditions.

Dr. Enrique Saldivar

Enrique Saldivar, MD, PhD

Dr. Saldivar is a physician and bioengineer with extensive experience in research, teaching, and the development of biomedical instrumentation. His academic training and professional work span medicine, engineering, and applied quantitative analysis, with a particular emphasis on experimental design, signal measurement, and system validation.

His research philosophy is grounded in methodological rigor, emphasizing reproducibility, procedural transparency, and careful control of experimental error. At the same time, he advocates an open and pragmatic approach to the empirical evaluation of unconventional hypotheses when they are clearly operationalized and investigated under appropriate scientific constraints.

In the present study, Dr. Saldivar served as the primary operator and protocol monitor, overseeing the randomization procedures, maintenance of blinding, and verification of the experimental data.
